OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL DATE: FRIDAY 19TH JULY 2019 THEME: THE TEACHABLE HEART. MEMORISE: Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Psalm 25:4 READ: Proverbs 9:7-9 7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. 8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. 9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. MESSAGE Teaching becomes a herculean task when a teacher is confronted with stubborn students. To be unteachable in the things of God is a very dangerous state for anyone to be in. Proverbs 29:1 says: “He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” Pharaoh found himself in this state and he did not end well. God warned him several times with at least ten plagues, yet he hardened his heart until he met his waterloo at the Red Sea. We also see a similar scenario in the case of Haman, who was warned by his wife and friends to desist from persecuting Mordecai, but he would not listen until he was executed on the same gallows he had built for Mordecai (Esther 6-7). I decree over someone using this devotional today: the pit which your enemies dug for you shall swallow them up in Jesus’ Name. Unlike Pharaoh and Haman, a teachable fellow is a pleasant student to have. A receptive heart is blessed for many reasons, some of which are indicated in today’s Bible reading. The Bible says wisdom is the principal thing and so we should go out to get wisdom and understanding, even if it costs us all we have (Proverbs 4:7). In other words, it is no use if a man possesses the whole world but lacks wisdom and understanding. The question now is, how can we get wisdom and understanding? Proverbs 9:9 says: “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.” This verse is saying that a wise man acquires wisdom by receiving instructions, and the understanding of an upright man is increased through teaching. Of course, the one being taught must have a teachable heart, as I is rightly said “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force it to drink.” Therefore, the first blessing of a teachable heart is that it increases in wisdom. This wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, which is manifested as deep reverence for God’s word (Proverbs 1:7). When someone who fears God is taught God’s word, it will restrain him or her from doing things against God’s will. For a heart to be teachable in God’s word, it must be meek. The Spirit of God makes this clear in Psalm 25:9, which says: “The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.” This trait, clearly demonstrated in today’s memory verse, made David a man after God’s heart. Anyone who desires to have a special place in God’s heart must also develop a teachable heart through meekness. Do you have a teachable heart? George Muller, a renowned evangelist, built many orphanages at Ashley Down, England. Without salary, he relied solely on God to supply the money and food needed to support the hundreds of homeless children he accommodated in the name of Christ. Being a man of extraordinary faith, he kept a motto on his desk for many years that brought comfort, strength and confidence to his heart. It reads: “It matters to Him about you.” Muller believed that those words captured the meaning of (1 Peter 5:7) and he rested his claim for divine help on that truth. He testified at the end of his life that the Lord had never failed to supply all his needs. The Israelites had complained of hunger and God had sent them bread from heaven with specific instructions. Although they were disobedient, He cared and provided food for them in the wilderness. In view of life's difficult circumstances, we are sometimes tempted to ask whether or not God really cares for us just as did Israel when they murmured against Moses because of hunger. As true Christians, we are precious in the sight of God. We were “not redeemed with corruptible things... But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” You can be rest assured that God who redeemed you from your sins loves you enough to provide for all your present needs. He knows your peculiar condition and He delights in providing for your needs, healing your sicknesses, delivering you from oppression and giving you joy in exchange for sadness. No matter how serious or terrible your situation may seem to be, rest assured that God is interested in your welfare. DAILY MANNA MONDAY 15TH JULY, 2019 LOOK UP TO HEAVEN 📜📜TEXT: ACTS 7:54-60📜📜 🔑📖KEY VERSE: “But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God” (ACTS 7:55). It is better to incur the world's hatred by testifying against its wickedness than gain its goodwill by going down the stream with it. Stephen's life and martyrdom are worthy proofs of that great worth. Identification with God is better than friendship with the world. No one ever looked up to God and gets defeated, even in the toughest of all situations. Stephen testified boldly of Christ before the Sanhedrin, condemning their crucifixion of Him Whom God approved. This led to his becoming the first martyr of the Christian Church. Here was an instance of the outrage and fury of the persecutors and of the courage and comfort of the persecuted. Here was hell in its fire and darkness, and heaven in its light and brightness. Stephen knew there was no comfort in the Jewish council, nor any prospect of justice at their hand. So, he set his eyes intently on heaven and sought justification there. When they were cut to the heart and gnashed upon him with their teeth, he had a view of the glory of Christ sufficient to fill him with joy unspeakable. The heavens were opened to give him a view of the happiness ahead. When dangers threaten us, when men threaten us, we should learn to fix our eyes on heaven's glory. Stephen ignored his persecutors' malice and cruelty; rather, he looked up to heaven for joy and divine assurance. Instead of looking about him, for a way of escape, he looked up to heaven for help. We may also see the glory of God during life's challenges if we manifest such a right attitude. Life isn’t a mystery for me because the Holy Spirit teaches me all things. God has given me His Word, to show me how to run with patience the race that is set before me. My spirit is open to correction and I have a teachable spirit! My heart is full of joy, love, kindness, and compassion. I refuse to allow bitterness, anger, or strife to take root in me. I walk in love today and always, confident that no weapon fashioned against me shall prosper. My gaze is on the Lord Jesus, and my energies are focused on fulfilling God's plans and purpose for my life. I function from a vantage position of rest without struggles, worries, or anxieties over anything; knowing that Jesus did all that is necessary for me to have a great life. I live a life of glory, grace, favour, and expansion. Hallelujah! I refuse to compare myself with anyone else, but measure my success base on my assignment here on earth. I walk by the same principles of faith by which my heavenly Father made the heavens and the earth! God has given me His Word, to show me how to run with patience the race that is set before me. My spirit is open to correction and I have a teachable spirit! My heart is full of joy, love, kindness, and compassion. I refuse to allow bitterness, anger, or strife to take root in me. I walk in love today and always, confident that no weapon fashioned against me shall prosper. My gaze is on the Lord Jesus, and my energies are focused on fulfilling God's plans and purpose for my life. I function from a vantage position of rest without struggles, worries, or anxieties over anything; knowing that Jesus did all that is necessary for me to have a great life.
