Mark 10:17, 21-22 (NKJV)
…, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" *Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

In Matthew 7:21, Jesus made it clear that not everyone that declares, “Lord, Lord,” will enter into His kingdom. Those that will be granted access are those that do the will of His Father. Although the man who came to Jesus in our text above referenced Him as “Good Teacher,” he was unwilling to be a good and obedient student. Yes, he had kept the commandments from his youth but he knew that there was still something missing- that is why he came to Jesus.
Outwardly, he appeared as someone who was willing to obey. In fact, he ran to Jesus and knelt down before Him, but deep down in his heart, he did not value obeying God enough to do the seemingly difficult thing that Jesus was asking him to do. Something else remained priority in his heart. When it became a matter of denying himself, taking up his cross and following Jesus, he was no longer willing to be yielded and obedient.
No matter how much you appear willing to love and obey God, it is your obedience to His will that really proves whether or not your loyalty to Him is true and from your heart. Remember, man looks at the outward but God looks at the heart, 1Sam.16:7. Since Jesus is really the Lord and owner of your life, you must always be ready to yield your entire heart and will to Him, no matter what it will cost you. Realize deep down in your heart that Jesus is a good Lord and that as such, whatever He instructs you to do is the very best for you.
PRAYER: I yield myself to You, Heavenly Father, and I receive your grace to love You and do Your will from my heart today.
