Honouring One Another in Our Work Places
Colossians 3:22-24 & Colossians 4:1 (The Message) Servants, do what you're told by your earthly masters… don't just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you'll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you're serving is Christ. *… masters, treat your servants considerately. Be fair with them. Don't forget for a minute that you, too, serve a Master — God in heaven.
Despite everything that King Saul did, David kept on honouring him and never desired anything evil for him. When he heard of King Saul’s death, he wept bitterly and still referred to him as the Lord’s anointed, 2Sam.1:1-14. David understood what Romans 13:1-2 (NIV) says, everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
The story of the Centurion who met Jesus concerning the healing of one of his servants is a very good example of how leaders should care and be concerned about the state of their followers, Luke 7:2-3. We can only imagine how that servant felt and responded to his duties after his healing. Now, as with the family, greater honour in the work place will lead to increased productivity, creativity, effectiveness and increased ability to provide value and solutions. Consider how Naaman benefitted, simply because himself and his wife listened to someone employed by them, 2Kings 5:1-5. I am sure that the way they treated the young maid was likely what made her willing to suggest a solution to her master’s health challenge. Let us lead by example and model honour in our work place, by treating everyone with honour and respect, not mindful of their cadre, tribe or status. We will experience greater growth and progress in our economy as a nation.
PRAYER: Give us the grace, Heavenly Father, to honour our leaders, colleagues and followers in our work places.
