Overcoming Unbelief 1

Overcoming Unbelief 1

Hebrew 3:12-15 (NKJV)
Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end.

Author PhotoWe are warned from scripture not to be found with a heart of unbelief, which is referred to as 'evil', according to our text. Scripture warns us not to have a heart of unbelief because it results in departing from the Lord. To have a heart of unbelief is to stop believing in the gospel and power of our lord Jesus Christ to save us in the way we initially believed.

You may ask, 'Is it possible for a believer to depart from the faith as a result of unbelief?' Yes! As we read further down to verse 13 of Hebrews Chapter 3, we note that it says, but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Unbelief arises as a result of the heart being hardened by sin.

Sin has a negative effect on the mind of the believer by hardening it until he or she no longer believes in the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the plan of Satan every time he uses the enticement of sin to seduce the believer. Satan's goal is to get the believer out of faith through unbelief that results from the continuous act of sin. That is why 2 Timothy 2:19 says, Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

Beloved, sin will often cause you to feel separated from and unworthy to be in the presence of the Lord. Therefore, flee from sin and every appearance of evil.

PRAYER FOCUS: Lord, I thank you for my victory over sin and the devil through Christ Jesus. I thank you because sin has no power over me and I have eternal life by Christ Jesus. Amen.
