Honouring One Another in Our Families
Ephesians 6:2-4 (NLT), 1Peter 3:7a (NLT) "Honor your father and mother." This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, "things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth." Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. … you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together…
If we must practice honouring everyone in our nation, as we learnt yesterday, it must start from the way we honour each other at home. Value and thank God for the family that you are in, for it is God Himself that places people in families. He wants us to submit to, value and honour the families that we have been blessed with, Psa.68:6. The family is the place where we are supposed to feel the most honored and also show the most honour. But today, so many people give more honour to outsiders than they do to their family members. Jesus said that the only place where a prophet lacks honour is in his own house, Matt. 13:57-58. This wrong attitude in the world resulted in Jesus being unable to do many mighty works in his hometown. Why? Because they were over familiar with Him and did not value the grace of God upon His life.
Our failure to honour each other in the home as we should is causing us to lose out on the abundance of wisdom, grace, blessing and virtue that are supposed to flow into our lives from one another. The inheritances of our families will also be preserved. By inheritance I am not referring to wealth alone, but also to things like values and relationship with God, 2Tim.1:5. Despite the differences in things like our mindsets and temperaments, we must be willing to trust one another and be tolerant and selfless. We must be very compassionate and understanding because we need each other. As we deliberately practice honour in our homes as children, parents and spouses, this culture of honour will spread to every sector of our nation.
PRAYER: Help me, Dear Lord, to show more honour to every member of my family. Help us to reflect Your perfect picture of the family.
