TAKING GOD FOR GRANTED
TEXT: LEVITICUS 10:1-11
Key Verse: “And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.” (LEVITICUS 10:1)_
God requires that all His commandments and laws given to us be obeyed to the letter. It is not for man to choose which ones to obey and which ones to discard. All the commandments carry equal weight. Disobedience will attract punishment as already prescribed by the Almighty.

The incident in the passage was quite unfortunate and avoidable. Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, did a despicable thing before the Lord by offering a strange fire. The Lord had just reviewed exactly how they were to carry out their functions in conducting acceptable worship. They presumed they could bring coals of fire to the altar from another source; hence, they embarked upon unguarded, compromising act. Yet on the contrary, it was expected that the fire on the altar should never be allowed to go out. Thus, they made the sacrifice unholy in addition to making the offering at an unauthorized time.
Whatever might have been responsible for their impious act, the truth remains that the priests took the Almighty for granted, acted irresponsibly and defiantly by rebelling against God’s law and venturing into the reserved responsibility of the high priest only.
There was a vital lesson for all Christian leaders and workers in God’s vineyard to learn from this. We must persevere in acts of holiness and emphasize throughout our teachings what is right and acceptable conduct before the Lord. We must avoid the use of strong drink at the Holy Communion/Lord’s Supper service and maintain reverence for vital tools and equipment used in God’s house. Above all, we must render to God, services that are manifestly acceptable. A plethora of service offered God on everyone’s terms, is as abominable as it is not rewardable.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Obedience to God is vital to acceptable service.
COVER to COVER: NUMBERS 21-22._
PONDER:
1. From the way the law against wine and drunkenness immediately followed the "strange fire", it was most likely the duo operated under the influence of alcohol v8-10.
2. They decided to experiment with disobedience and rebellion in the laboratory of profanity. Many, including 'Christians' still conduct such experiments of trying disobedience today.
3. There are now jesters, clowns and comedians, called entertainers, who specialize in "strange fire" on the pulpit in order to make people laugh.
4. Most drunks generally make caricature of divine things under the influence of alcohol.
5. Such are guilty of taking the name of the Lord in vain. The Lord will not hold such guiltless including those who are appreciating them Exodus 20:7.
HYMN: Holy Holy Holy (GHS 11)
1. Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee.
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
2 Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore Thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
which wert and art and evermore shalt be.
3 Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
though the eye made blind by sin Thy glory may not see,
only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity.
4 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity.
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Lord, I repent of taking your name in vain and experimenting with disobedience to Your word in every area of my life.
2. Lord, I will henceforth frown and avoid those who make caricature of divine and holy things, within and outside the church.
3. Pray for the preacher and all the ministers at the service today for utterances and anointing.
4. Pray for sinners, backsliders and saints that the Word will profit effectually in all.
