WHEN WE FORGET
TEXT: PSALM 78:10-20
Key Verse: "They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.
(Psalms 78:10‭-‬11)_
One of the weakness of the human nature is forgetfulness. It is sad that man does not often look back into the past to learn from it. This weakness cost him much. The present is often too loud and allowed to blot the memory of the past, which can enhance a better future. It is true that we must not be so tied to the past; yet, we cannot totally forget those things in the past that helped us to where we are now. Alas, most people are forgetful of God's faithfulness and are suffering the bitter consequences today.

The children of Israel displayed this problem of forgetfulness repeatedly in their history. They had experienced the miraculous that other nations around them longed for, yet they kept forgetting God. This is the focus of today's passage. Their failure to remember His great wonders let into unbelief and sinful practices that provoked God greatly. They doubted God's power and ability to meet their present needs and as such, turned to other gods for help.
Unbelief, fear, complaints and murmuring stem from forgetting God and these bring about defeat, failure and backsliding. If we are careful to look back to recall even a little of the mercies and Deliverances God has wrought for us in the past, we will come to understand that whatever present challenges we may be facing, they are no match for God. If God has been faithful to us in the past, He certainly will be faithful to us today.
We need to help our memory in order not to forget God and wander away from Him. Raise monuments of testimonies of God's goodness. Read and listen to testimonies of His faithfulness and from time to time share the testimonies of the goodness of God in your life to others.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Forgetfulness of God's past dealings breeds fear and defeat.
COVER to COVER: DEUTERONOMY 28-29.
PONDER:
1. They forgot His works. They forgot His wonders v11.
2. v12-16 list out some of those wonders God did for them.
3. The consequences of forgetfulness include sinning v17, provoking God v18 and blasphemy and complaining against God v19.
4. Recall and ponder about the day you got saved from sins, freed from dominion of Satan, received special miracles or intervention in our affairs etc.
5. God is immutable. If He did wonders for you yesterday, He will do much more if you don't forget His past miracles.
HYMN: Lead me to Calvary (GHS 81)
1. King of my life, I crown Thee now,
Thine shall the glory be:
Lest I forget Thy thorn crowned brow,
Lead me to Calvary.
Chorus:
Lest I forget Gethsemane;
Lest I forget Thine agony;
Lest I forget Thy love for me,
Lead me to Calvary.
2 Show me the tomb where Thou wast laid,
Tenderly mourned and wept;
Angels in robes of light arrayed
Guarded Thee whilst Thou slept.[Chorus]
3 Let me like Mary, through the gloom,
Come with a gift to Thee;
Show to me now the empty tomb,
Lead me to Calvary.[Chorus]
4 May I be willing, Lord, to bear
Daily my cross for Thee;
Even Thy cup of grief to share,
Thou hast borne all for me.[Chorus]
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Recall the great things God did for you since you met Christ and give praises to Him.
2. Promise God that you will never forget His great manifestations in your life and ask God never to be forgetful of His benefits.
3. Pray on each stanza of the Hymn👆
4. Let Gethsemane be fresh before all Church members and draw all closer to Calvary.
