TRUST IN MAN?
TEXT: PSALM 62:1-12
Key Verse: “Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.” (Psalm 62:9)
John Maxwell in his book, ‘The Leader Within You’ stated that the Great Wall of China was built so high that no one could get over it and so thick that no one could tunnel through it. Amazingly, in the first 100 years of its existence, China was invaded three times. The enemy invaded through a gate left open for them because those who guarded it had been bribed. While the people sat comfortably behind the security of this gigantic wall which still exists today, they failed to teach their children integrity and patriotism. So, they were sold out to the enemy.

David expressed his confidence in God who was his Salvation and Defense. He stated the danger of putting one’s confidence in unregenerate men, who can be very undependable. He described men as lighter than vanity when placed in a balance, and said, trusting in them is like putting one’s hope in a mirage. He also cautioned against putting one’s confidence in riches which can be very disappointing as money can fail anytime. He concluded by extolling the justice and equity of God as more reason to trust Him. God is indeed faithful.
We can’t be too sure of the actual event that prompted the context of this psalm but the setting fits into the many stories of betrayals that David faced ranging from his plight with Saul after killing Goliath and the tacit support given the rebellious Absolom by some leaders in Israel.
Having people whom you placed your utmost trust turn against you is no longer news. People can disappoint and even betray the trust placed on them because they are unregenerate. Like David, we must always put our absolute trust in the most reliable and ever merciful God.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Better to trust the unseen God than believe in finite man.
COVER to COVER: NUMBERS 26-27.
PONDER:
Secret of Victory over Distressing and Destructive Enemies:
1. He was not ignorant of the existence of enemies and their goal v4.
2. He was not ignorant of their devices and weapons of warfare v4
3. He puts his trust ONLY in God and not in any man v1, 5,9.
4. He was strong in repeating faith confession. Observe that the confession in v5,6 is a repetition of v1,2. Observe that his faith in v6 is stronger than in v 2.
5. He poured out his heart to God in prayers ceaselessly and with full trust in God. v8.
HYMN:
Rejoice in the Lord, O let His mercy Cheer (GHS 16)
1. Rejoice in the Lord! Oh, let His mercy cheer;
He sunders the bands that enthrall;
Redeemed by His blood, why should we ever fear,
Since Jesus is our all in all?
Chorus:
If God be for us, if God be for us,
if God be for us,
Who can be against us?
Who? who? who?
Who can be against us, against us?
2. Be strong in the Lord! rejoicing in His might,
Be loyal and true day by day;
When evils assail, be valiant for the right,
And He will be our strength and stay.
3. Confide in His Word, His promises so sure;
In Christ they are yea and amen;
Though earth pass away, they ever shall endure,
’Tis written o’er and o’er again.
4. Abide in the Lord, secure in His control,
’Tis life everlasting begun;
To pluck from His hand the weakest, trembling soul,
It never, never can be done!
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Lord, I accept and confess that you ONLY is my Rock, Salvation and Defence in this world of battles. I shall not be moved.
2. Lord, I want you to waste and destroy all the subtle, filthy and evil weapons of warfare that the enemy is using against my destiny.
3. Lord, I confess that power belongs to you and request that you arise and manifest the power on my behalf.
4. Arise, O Lord, and subdue all the enemies of your children in the Church v3.
