POWER AND POSSIBILITIES OF PRAYING
📖 TEXT: LUKE 11:1-13
🔑📖 KEY VERSE: "For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened" (LUKE 11:10).
The news caused some excitement in some quarters and anxiety in others when some years ago, medical authorities of a specialist hospital in Kansas City, Missouri,
United States, randomly selected 990 heart patients from their Coronary Care Unit and divided them into two groups. The aim was to find out whether or not it could be proved scientifically that prayer works. The names of patients belonging to the first group with little or no medical attention were sent to Christian intercessory groups to be prayed for, while the second group were given intensive medical care without prayer treatment.
The outcome of the scientific experiment slated to last four weeks surprised the cynical researchers. A medical check-up conducted after the experiment showed that the patients belonging to the group that were given little medical care but intensive prayer treatment recovered faster than the patients given only intensive medical care but no prayer treatment.
The disciples had been with Jesus and noticed that He placed importance on prayers. They decided that they needed to learn to pray and asked the Lord to teach them how to pray. Jesus gave a model of prayer, which is referred to as the Lord’s Prayer. He further explained the reason and effectiveness of prayer using the need of an importunate friend at midnight.
Many Christians pray, yet they remain disappointed as a result of unanswered prayers. The major reasons are sin (secret and unconfessed) and unbelief. To fully enjoy the power and possibilities of prayer, you need to get rid of all sins and manifest faith when you pray that God will fulfil His promises.
